Due to the similarity of the physicochemical properties of methanol and ethanol, the identification of adulteration is difficult. The colorimetric technique allows detection of tampering with speed and accuracy. The technique is based on the oxidation of methanol present in the sample to formaldehyde. After the addition of the "Schiff" reagent, the color change of the sample occurs, whose intensity is proportional to the concentration in percentage (v/v) of methanol.
